Heftumschlag information #1PLOT: In the center of the room was a steel table specially made for this action by Anatol Herzfeld, at which, dressed in red, yellow and blue robes, sat Joachim Duckwitz, Ulrich Meister and Johannes Stüttgen, their wrists fastened to the table with steel clamps. Stüttgen "had a bandage wrapped around his head, which he has been wearing for a week as a symbol of the sickness of our time."

In one corner, Anatol stood at a "control panel," flashing signals for those sitting at the table: Green for speaking, red for silence. "While they spoke of the freedom of the individual, of the new realm of consciousness, of Plato and Socrates in what at first seemed confused free speech, Beuys stood in the corner and gestured.

In a dimly lit corner of the room, Beuys, who had previously made a graphic-diagrammatic mark on the wall, stood and moved his arms and hands asymmetrically in front of his body and head at various, constantly changing heights and positions, very focused on himself, almost autistic. "Staring fixedly at the surroundings, making robotically awkward movements with the body, arms and hands, kneading the air or extending the index finger." He held his right open hand, then his fist in front of his face for a moment, made pointing, pressing, squeezing gestures, but none that would have had a pantomime-imitating character: not performing, but autonomous gestures. There were rapid and then slowed down movements, also short moments of pausing. Throughout, there was a fast, rhythmic change of gestures.

"Tirelessly, for two hours, bathed in sweat, he spread his hands apart, clenched them, bent his upper body, went down on his knees." All expression was with the gestures; facial expressions were withdrawn to rigidity.

Under the effort and the tension, the movements became partly more mechanical, partly more threatening in the course of the action. The whole thing took place in silence. "On his lapel he wore as a club word Fluxus Zone West, the new name for the former German Student Party."

Translation: It's a shame, of course, that the tape is gone. I already thought so. You could release
the film as an edition. Would have to see it again beforehand, whether we cut or leave it alone.
Best regards Joseph Beuys

The recorded image and sound material is deliberately asynchronous in its length and technical layout. Left in the sequence of events, it is possible to offset film and tape against each other at will in terms of time and thus to compose ever new versions oneself.
