Knochengeld is an alternative means of payment by the group Ioë Bsaffot (Bert Papenfuß, Wolfgang Krause, Nils Chlupka, G.P. Adan).
Within 1 week 54 invited artists produced their bills for circulation in an edition of 100 pieces each. All bills are numbered and signed, Ioë Bsaffot provides them with validity stamps. In total there are 100 bundles with 54 different motifs, i.e. 1 bill from each artist.
In O two DM can be exchanged for bones, the gallery becomes a bank for 7 weeks. The bones are issued as complete bundles or individually. One bill is 20 bones and is equal to 20 DM. Each week, a bill loses 1 bone / 1 DM in value if it is not spent. The term bone goes back to Diogenes - who suggested that money should be made of bones so that it cannot be hoarded.
About 30 stores and restaurants in Prenzlauer Berg accept the alternative currency, and DM is given as change. The stores stamp accepted bills with their stamp; this stamp is evidence of circulation. Until Wednesday, the participating stores can exchange the accepted bills back into DM without loss of value (shrinkage) in o two.
After 7 weeks the bone money experiment is successfully concluded on 29.12.. Bone money is the first alternative money project in Germany since 1900, which was not broken off by justice or police. - Wolfgang Krause
